Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi faced significant challenges with depression, but he has now achieved a long-cherished goal by graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Finance from the University of the South Pacific. Upon receiving his degree, he reflected on how far he has come since his dream of becoming a lawyer did not materialize a decade ago.
Redirecting his ambitions, Mr. Tavatuilagi set his sights on becoming a bank officer and aimed to join the USP alumni. He emphasized the importance of developing a positive mindset, stating that seeing the good in every situation was a pivotal starting point for him.
“I associated myself more with quality people and found the right support network,” he noted. Mr. Tavatuilagi highlighted the crucial role his family played in his journey, providing him with the determination to break free from the shackles of depression. He constantly challenged himself to view things more positively.
Originating from Nabouciwa in Tailevu, he also maintains maternal connections to Nasaqalau in Lakeba, Lau. At 33 years old, he remains committed to becoming the best version of himself whenever opportunities arise.
He acknowledged that battling depression was one of the most significant challenges he faced during his academic journey. “It’s all about passing with peers who had a lot of faith in me; they encouraged me to keep pushing despite the struggles and failures,” he recalled. He expressed gratitude for the support of his family and friends, stating, “God was right at the center of it all, and I’m just grateful for the gift of family and friendship.”
