From Depression to Graduation: A Journey of Resilience

Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi faced the challenge of overcoming depression while pursuing his educational goals. After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Finance from the University of the South Pacific, Mr. Tavatuilagi reflected on his long-held aspiration to achieve this milestone.

A decade ago, he had dreams of becoming a lawyer, which did not come to fruition. However, he decided to change his focus toward becoming a bank officer and aimed to join the ranks of USP alumni. He is now celebrating that achievement, crediting his positive mindset and the support he received along the way.

Mr. Tavatuilagi emphasized the importance of surrounding himself with quality people and creating a strong support network. He acknowledged his family’s crucial role in his journey, stating, “I was determined to get out of the shackles of depression. I challenged myself to see things differently and be positive.”

Hailing from Nabouciwa, Nakelo, in Tailevu, with maternal ties to Nasaqalau, Lakeba, Lau, the 33-year-old remains committed to becoming the best version of himself when given opportunities. He described depression as the most significant struggle he endured while working toward his degree.

He expressed gratitude toward his peers who believed in him and encouraged him during difficult times. “But God was right at the center of it all; I’m just grateful for the gift of family and friendship,” he said.
