Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi has successfully navigated the challenging journey of overcoming depression while achieving his academic goals. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Finance from the University of the South Pacific, Mr. Tavatuilagi shared that this achievement has been a long-cherished dream.
Years ago, Mr. Tavatuilagi aspired to become a lawyer, a dream that did not come to fruition. However, he chose to shift his focus towards a career in banking, ultimately fulfilling his goal of joining the USP alumni. He emphasized the importance of a positive mindset, noting that recognizing the good in every situation was crucial for him.
He stated, “I associated myself more with quality people and found the right support network.” The support from his family and a determined attitude played significant roles in his progress. “I was determined to break free from the shackles of depression. I challenged myself to think differently and remain positive.”
At 33 years old and originally from Nabouciwa, Nakelo, in Tailevu, Mr. Tavatuilagi remains committed to being the best version of himself whenever opportunities arise. He acknowledged that depression was one of the biggest challenges he faced while pursuing his degree, but he credits his peers for their encouragement and belief in him during tough times. “God was at the center of it all; I’m grateful for the gift of family and friendship,” he concluded.
