From Darkness to Dignity: Jeremiah’s Inspiring Transformation

Jeremiah Uarua Baba, a 20-year-old from Lakeba, Tubou in Lau, has transformed his life from one of drugs to dignity, inspired by the belief that while the past cannot be changed, the future can be shaped. Growing up in the squatter settlement of Wailea near Suva, Jeremiah experienced a troubled childhood, living with his aunt and uncle without knowing his parents. His early years were marked by chaos, leaving him vulnerable to negative influences.

At a young age, Jeremiah fell into drug use after being introduced to it by a friend during his time at Assemblies of God Primary School. This escape quickly became a regular part of his life, and he began taking drugs to school without attracting the attention of his teachers. He felt misunderstood at home and turned to friends who he believed offered him a sense of belonging, despite the dangers they presented.

By 17, Jeremiah was not only using drugs but also selling them. After being sent to John Wesley College by his uncle, he struggled academically and eventually dropped out. Seeking refuge, he returned to his village in Lakeba, where he met his biological parents for the first time. Their encouragement to continue his education led him back to school at the age of 18.

This marked a significant turning point in his life when he encountered the International Youth Foundation (IYF). Initially skeptical, Jeremiah found encouragement from a pastor who called him a “man of God,” which helped him recognize his potential. This positive interaction shifted his perspective and motivated him to embrace change.

Through IYF’s teachings, Jeremiah began addressing his past while learning valuable lessons, including the importance of being open to change. He realized that his true peace was not found in drugs but in spirituality. With newfound resolve, he committed to giving up drugs, a decision he once thought impossible.

With support from IYF, Jeremiah achieved personal peace and significant milestones, including his first overseas trip to Korea, where he represented Fiji in a dance group. This experience broadened his horizons and reinforced his belief in the power of change.

Now, by sharing his story, Jeremiah aims to inspire hope and transformation within his community. He advocates for the belief that with divine assistance, anyone can change, urging others to recognize their shortcomings and allow faith to guide their paths.
