Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi faced significant challenges due to depression, but this did not deter him from achieving his academic goals. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Finance from the University of the South Pacific, he reflected on how this achievement was a long-cherished dream.
A decade ago, he aspired to become a lawyer, but when that dream did not come to fruition, he shifted his focus towards a career as a bank officer. Today, he proudly joins the ranks of the USP alumni after successfully completing his degree.
Mr. Tavatuilagi emphasized the importance of mindset in overcoming obstacles, stating that he learned to recognize the positives in every situation. He surrounded himself with supportive individuals, which he credits as a vital aspect of his journey. “Having a strong support system from my family was crucial,” he noted. “I was determined to break free from the constraints of depression and adopted a more positive outlook.”
Originally from Nabouciwa, Nakelo, in Tailevu, and with maternal ties to Nasaqalau in Lakeba, Lau, the 33-year-old is committed to becoming the best version of himself when opportunities arise. He described depression as one of the toughest challenges he faced while earning his degree.
“The encouragement from my peers, who believed in me, played a significant role in my perseverance through struggles and setbacks,” he shared. “Above all, my faith and the support of my family and friends were at the heart of my journey.”
