From Darkness to Achievement: One Man’s Journey to Overcoming Depression

Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi faced significant challenges due to depression, but he has recently celebrated a major milestone by graduating from the University of the South Pacific. Achieving this qualification has been a long-standing dream for Mr. Tavatuilagi.

A decade ago, he aspired to become a lawyer, but that dream did not come to fruition. Instead, he shifted his focus towards becoming a bank officer and joining the university’s alumni network, which he has now successfully accomplished. He attributes his success to cultivating a positive mindset and surrounding himself with supportive and quality individuals.

Mr. Tavatuilagi emphasized the importance of a strong support system, particularly from his family, in overcoming his mental health struggles. He was determined to break free from the constraints of depression and made a conscious effort to see things in a more positive light.

Originally hailing from Nabouciwa, Nakelo, in Tailevu, he has maternal ties to Nasaqalau in Lakeba, Lau. At 33, Mr. Tavatuilagi is committed to becoming the best version of himself whenever opportunities arise. He acknowledged that depression was a formidable obstacle throughout his academic journey but credited his peers for their unwavering faith in him, encouraging him to persevere despite the difficulties he faced.

He expressed gratitude for the blessings of family and friendships, highlighting that his faith played a central role in his journey to success.
