Waisale Taufa Tavatuilagi faced significant challenges with depression but has now achieved a long-cherished dream after graduating from the University of the South Pacific. Following his graduation on Friday, Mr. Tavatuilagi reflected on his aspirations, noting that a decade ago, he had hoped to become a lawyer. Although that dream did not come to fruition, he shifted his focus to becoming a bank officer and joined the ranks of the USP alumni.
Mr. Tavatuilagi emphasized that a positive mindset was crucial in his journey. He sought the company of supportive individuals and established a strong support network. “With the right attitude and solid backing from my family, this was a critical part of my journey,” he stated. He was determined to overcome the challenges posed by depression, urging himself to adopt a more positive outlook on life.
Hailing from Nabouciwa, Nakelo, in Tailevu, and with maternal connections to Nasaqalau, Lakeba, Lau, the 33-year-old remains focused on striving to be the best version of himself when opportunities arise. He acknowledged that dealing with depression was one of the toughest battles he faced while pursuing his degree.
Mr. Tavatuilagi expressed gratitude towards his peers, who showed unwavering faith in him and motivated him to persevere despite numerous struggles and setbacks. “God was at the center of it all, and I’m just thankful for the gift of family and friendship,” he added.
