Meli Rokotakala, after two decades in the tourism sector, found his true calling during the global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he had to leave his position in Nadi and return to his home in Nabalebale Village, Cakaudrove. This period of uncertainty allowed him to reflect on his talents and passions.
While enjoying the tranquility of his backyard garden, he discovered a love for horticulture, which inspired him to start making decorative arrangements for homes. This hobby evolved into a business venture named Meli’s Artfeast Investment, built on his experiences with South Sea Cruises, Fiji Club, and Tuitai Adventure Cruises.
Meli quickly gained a reputation as a talented event decorator in Savusavu and Labasa, providing his artistic services for various events including weddings, birthday celebrations, funerals, corporate functions, and religious gatherings. Known for his attention to detail, Meli carefully selects flowers from his garden to create arrangements that highlight his keen sense of color and design. Additionally, he opened a savings account with the BSP branch in Savusavu, marking a step towards financial independence.
When Meli discovered the BSP’s three-day workshop in collaboration with Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) under the THRIVE programme, he recognized it as a valuable opportunity to enhance his business acumen. The THRIVE programme, which stands for “Together, Helping to build a Resilient, Inclusive, and Vibrant Economy,” aims to equip entrepreneurs with essential management skills.
Meli understood that success in business goes beyond passion; it requires a solid grasp of financial management. He remarked, “Not everyone is destined for blue- or white-collar jobs. Some young people have the potential to become successful entrepreneurs, and it’s crucial that they have the support they need to grow.” As the eldest of four siblings and a Savusavu Secondary School alumnus, he underscored the significance of pursuing a career that brings happiness, noting that many individuals remain in unsatisfying jobs to support their families.
Grateful for the transformative experience offered by the BSP and ABV workshop in Labasa, Meli encourages young people to explore their talents and contribute positively to their communities instead of merely conforming to societal expectations.
The Fiji THRIVE programme began as the “Your Enterprise Scheme” (YES) at BSP headquarters in Papua New Guinea in 2019. In partnership with ABV, the initiative was created to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in PNG by providing crucial knowledge and resources. BSP Fiji adapted the programme to the local context, rebranding it as THRIVE to reflect its commitment to fostering a resilient and inclusive economy.
