From Crisis to Creativity: One Man’s Journey into Entrepreneurship

After two decades in the tourism sector, Meli Rokotakala found his true calling during a global crisis. In 2021, as the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped the world, Meli left his position in Nadi and returned to his roots in Nabalebale Village, Cakaudrove. This challenging period prompted him to reflect on his talents and passions.

While enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of his backyard, Meli discovered a love for the colorful beauty of flowers. This appreciation for horticulture sparked the creation of house decorations, evolving into a thriving business. Drawing on his previous experiences with South Sea Cruises, Fiji Club, and Tuitai Adventure Cruises, Meli decided to dedicate himself to his own endeavor, founding Meli’s Artfeast Investment.

Since launching his venture, Meli has gained a reputation as a prominent event decorator in Savusavu and Labasa, enhancing various events such as birthdays, weddings, funerals, corporate meetings, and religious ceremonies. A perfectionist at heart, he carefully selects flowers from his garden to ensure each arrangement is a true reflection of his artistic vision.

Meli’s entrepreneurial path has also led him to open a savings account with the BSP branch in Savusavu, marking a key step toward financial stability.

When Meli learned about a three-day workshop offered by BSP in partnership with Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) as part of the THRIVE program, he eagerly participated to enhance his skills. THRIVE, an initiative aimed at fostering a resilient and inclusive economy, equips entrepreneurs with essential business management knowledge. Meli understands that the road to success hinges not only on passion but also on the ability to manage business finances effectively.

“Not everyone is meant for traditional jobs,” Meli noted. “Some youths have the potential to be successful entrepreneurs, and they need the right support to thrive.” As the eldest sibling and a former student of Savusavu Secondary School, he stressed the importance of pursuing fulfilling work, expressing concern for those who remain in unfulfilling jobs for their families’ sake.

Meli is thankful to BSP and ABV for the transformative experience offered by the workshop in Labasa. He encourages young individuals to explore and embrace their unique talents, advocating for contributions to their communities rather than merely fitting in.

The Fiji THRIVE program originated from the “Your Enterprise Scheme” (YES) initiated at BSP headquarters in Papua New Guinea in 2019. Partnering with ABV, it aimed to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in PNG through valuable knowledge and resources. BSP Fiji later adapted and refined the program to suit the local environment, renaming it THRIVE to underscore its dedication to fostering a robust and inclusive economy.
