After two decades in the tourism sector, Meli Rokotakala found his true calling during a global crisis. In 2021, as the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the world, Meli left his job in Nadi and returned to his home in Nabalebale Village, Cakaudrove. This period of uncertainty became a time for him to reflect on his talents.
While enjoying the tranquility of his backyard garden, Meli developed a passion for the beauty of flowers. This interest in horticulture led to the creation of house decorations, a hobby that quickly evolved into a full-fledged business. Drawing from his experiences at South Sea Cruises, Fiji Club, and Tuitai Adventure Cruises, Meli founded his own company—Meli’s Artfeast Investment.
Since launching his business, Meli has gained recognition as an event decorator in Savusavu and Labasa, enhancing various events such as birthday celebrations, funerals, weddings, corporate functions, and religious ceremonies. His attention to detail drives him to manually select flowers from his garden, ensuring each arrangement is a reflection of his keen eye for color and design. Opening a savings account at the BSP branch in Savusavu has also been a significant step in his journey toward financial independence.
When Meli learned about a three-day workshop by BSP in collaboration with Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) under the THRIVE programme, he eagerly participated to expand his business knowledge. THRIVE, which stands for “Together, Helping to build a Resilient, Inclusive, and Vibrant Economy,” aims to equip entrepreneurs with essential skills for effective business management. Meli understands that success involves more than passion; it also requires the ability to manage profit and loss effectively.
Reflecting on career choices, Meli expressed that not everyone is suited for traditional jobs. He believes some young individuals can thrive as entrepreneurs and emphasizes the need for support in their growth. As the eldest of four siblings and a graduate of Savusavu Secondary School, Meli advocates pursuing work that brings happiness.
He stated, “Many people are unhappy in their jobs but continue for the sake of their families. It’s vital to find out what makes you truly happy and pursue it.” Meli is grateful to BSP and ABV for the opportunity to attend the workshop in Labasa, which he considers a transformative experience. He encourages the youth to identify their unique talents and contribute to their communities rather than simply conforming to societal expectations.
The Fiji THRIVE programme began as the “Your Enterprise Scheme” (YES) at BSP headquarters in Papua New Guinea in 2019. Partnering with ABV, the initiative was created to empower and support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in PNG by providing important knowledge and resources. BSP Fiji adapted the programme for the local market and renamed it THRIVE to reflect its focus on building a resilient, inclusive, and vibrant economy.
