After spending 20 years in the tourism sector, Meli Rokotakala discovered his true passion amidst the global crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Meli left his job in Nadi and returned to his home in Nabalebale Village, Cakaudrove. This uncertain period prompted him to reflect on his unique talents.
During his time in the tranquil setting of his backyard garden, Meli became captivated by the beauty of flowers. His newfound interest in horticulture led him to create decorative arrangements for homes, a hobby that quickly evolved into a thriving business. Drawing from his past work experiences with South Sea Cruises, Fiji Club, and Tuitai Adventure Cruises, he founded Meli’s Artfeast Investment.
Meli has since become a prominent event decorator in Savusavu and Labasa, transforming various occasions, including birthdays, weddings, funerals, corporate events, and religious gatherings, with his artistic flair. A perfectionist, he carefully selects flowers from his garden, ensuring each arrangement showcases his creative vision.
His entrepreneurial journey also included establishing a savings account with the BSP branch in Savusavu, marking a step toward financial autonomy.
Recognizing an opportunity for growth, Meli participated in a three-day workshop conducted by BSP in partnership with Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) through the THRIVE program. This initiative, which stands for “Together, Helping to build a Resilient, Inclusive, and Vibrant Economy,” aims to provide entrepreneurs with essential business management skills.
Meli understands that true success in business involves effectively managing profits and losses and not just relying on passion. He believes in the potential of young individuals to become successful entrepreneurs, emphasizing the necessity of support for their development.
As the eldest of four siblings and a graduate of Savusavu Secondary School, Meli highlighted the importance of pursuing work that brings happiness. He remarked on how many people remain in jobs they dislike for the sake of their families and encouraged others to seek out what truly makes them happy.
Meli expressed gratitude to BSP and ABV for the impactful workshop he attended in Labasa, which he described as transformative. He urges young people to explore their talents and contribute positively to their communities instead of merely following conventional paths.
The Fiji THRIVE program originated as the “Your Enterprise Scheme” (YES) in 2019 at BSP’s headquarters in Papua New Guinea. In collaboration with ABV, the program was established to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in PNG by offering crucial knowledge and resources. BSP Fiji later adapted the program to better suit the local market, renaming it THRIVE to reflect its commitment to nurturing a resilient and inclusive economy.
