From Crisis to Creativity: Meli’s Journey in Entrepreneurship

After two decades in the tourism sector, Meli Rokotakala discovered his true passion during a global crisis. In 2021, as the world contended with the COVID-19 pandemic, Meli left his position in Nadi and returned to his home in Nabalebale Village, Cakaudrove. This time of uncertainty provided him with a chance to reflect and identify the talents he possessed.

While enjoying the tranquility of his backyard garden, Meli developed a deep appreciation for the beauty of flowers. This newfound passion for horticulture pushed him to create decorative pieces for homes, a hobby that soon evolved into a thriving business. Drawing from his previous experiences with South Sea Cruises, Fiji Club, and Tuitai Adventure Cruises, Meli decided to channel his skills into his own venture—Meli’s Artfeast Investment.

Since launching his business, Meli has established himself as a prominent event decorator in Savusavu and Labasa, transforming various events such as birthday parties, funerals, weddings, corporate functions, and religious ceremonies with his creative flair. A perfectionist at heart, he handpicks flowers from his garden to ensure each arrangement showcases his artistic vision and attention to detail. Additionally, Meli opened a savings account with the BSP branch in Savusavu, a significant milestone towards achieving financial autonomy.

When Meli heard about BSP’s three-day workshop in partnership with Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) under the THRIVE programme, he eagerly took the chance to enhance his skills. THRIVE, which stands for “Together, Helping to build a Resilient, Inclusive, and Vibrant Economy,” aims to equip entrepreneurs with essential business management skills. Meli understood that running a business requires more than passion; it involves effectively managing profits and losses.

Reflecting on employment paths, he stated, “Not everyone is destined for blue- or white-collar jobs. Some young people can become successful entrepreneurs, and it’s vital they receive the necessary support.” As the eldest of four siblings and an alumnus of Savusavu Secondary School, Meli stressed the importance of finding joy in one’s work. “Many people stay in jobs they dislike for their families’ sake. It’s crucial to discover what truly makes you happy and pursue it.”

Meli expressed profound appreciation for BSP and ABV, regarding the Labasa workshop as a life-changing experience. He encouraged young individuals to uncover their unique talents and to contribute to their communities instead of simply conforming to societal expectations.

The Fiji THRIVE programme, initially launched as the “Your Enterprise Scheme” (YES) at BSP headquarters in Papua New Guinea in 2019, was developed in collaboration with ABV to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in PNG. This programme provides essential skills, resources, and knowledge to support local businesses. BSP Fiji adapted the initiative for the local market, renaming it THRIVE to reinforce its dedication to fostering a resilient, inclusive, and vibrant economy.
