From Crisis to Creativity: How One Man Found His Passion in Horticulture

After two decades in the tourism sector, Meli Rokotakala uncovered his true calling during the global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Meli had to leave his position in Nadi and return to his home in Nabalebale Village, Cakaudrove. This period allowed him to reflect and discover the talents he possessed.

While enjoying the tranquility of his backyard garden, Meli became captivated by the beauty of flowers. This newfound interest in horticulture inspired him to start crafting decorative pieces for homes, which quickly transformed into a thriving business. Drawing from his prior experiences with South Sea Cruises, Fiji Club, and Tuitai Adventure Cruises, he launched his own venture called Meli’s Artfeast Investment.

Since then, Meli has gained a reputation as a popular event decorator in Savusavu and Labasa, creatively enhancing various events such as birthday parties, funerals, weddings, corporate functions, and religious ceremonies. A perfectionist at heart, he carefully selects flowers from his garden to ensure that each arrangement showcases his keen eye for color and design. Additionally, he took a significant step towards financial independence by opening a savings account with the BSP branch in Savusavu.

When Meli learned about a three-day workshop offered by BSP in partnership with Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) under the THRIVE programme, he eagerly joined to enhance his business skills. THRIVE—an acronym for “Together, Helping to build a Resilient, Inclusive, and Vibrant Economy”—focuses on equipping entrepreneurs with the necessary tools to manage their businesses effectively. Meli acknowledged that recognizing the right approach to running a business is crucial, noting that success hinges on understanding both passion and financial management.

He reflected on how not everyone is meant for traditional employment, stating that many young individuals have the potential to be successful entrepreneurs, and it is vital for them to receive the necessary support for growth. As the eldest of four siblings and a Savusavu Secondary School alumnus, Meli stressed the significance of pursuing fulfilling work.

He believes that while many people remain in unsatisfying jobs for their families, discovering true happiness through work is essential. Meli expressed heartfelt thanks to BSP and ABV for the transformative experience the workshop provided and encouraged young people to pursue their unique talents, urging them to contribute to their communities instead of simply conforming.

The Fiji THRIVE programme began as the “Your Enterprise Scheme” (YES) at BSP headquarters in Papua New Guinea in 2019. Collaborating with ABV, the initiative was created to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in PNG by providing critical resources and skills. BSP Fiji adapted and renamed the programme THRIVE to reflect its commitment to fostering a resilient, inclusive, and vibrant economy.
