From Crisis to Creativity: How One Man Found His Passion During the Pandemic

Meli Rokotakala, after two decades in the tourism industry, discovered his true passion during the global COVID-19 crisis in 2021. Having to leave his position in Nadi and return to his hometown of Nabalebale Village in Cakaudrove, he used this period for introspection to uncover his hidden talents.

While enjoying the peaceful environment of his backyard garden, Meli developed a fascination with flowers, which inspired him to create decorative arrangements for homes. This budding interest quickly evolved into a business named Meli’s Artfeast Investment. Drawing from his experience with South Sea Cruises, Fiji Club, and Tuitai Adventure Cruises, Meli transformed his skills and passion into a successful venture.

Today, he is a highly sought-after event decorator in Savusavu and Labasa, known for his exceptional work at various events, including birthday parties, funerals, weddings, corporate functions, and religious ceremonies. Meli’s keen eye for color and design drives him to handpick flowers from his garden, ensuring each arrangement is perfect.

His entrepreneurial journey also includes opening a savings account at the BSP branch in Savusavu, a crucial step towards achieving financial independence. Recognizing the importance of gaining further knowledge, Meli eagerly participated in BSP’s three-day workshop alongside Australian Business Volunteers under the THRIVE program.

THRIVE, which stands for “Together, Helping to build a Resilient, Inclusive, and Vibrant Economy,” is focused on equipping entrepreneurs with the vital skills needed to manage their businesses effectively. Meli understands that success is not solely based on passion but also on the ability to navigate the financial aspects of entrepreneurship.

As the oldest of four siblings and a graduate of Savusavu Secondary School, Meli believes in the necessity of pursuing work that brings happiness. He noted that many people remain in unfulfilling jobs for family obligations, and emphasized the importance of finding personal joy in one’s career.

Meli expressed his gratitude to BSP and ABV for the transformative workshop experience, urging young individuals to identify their unique talents and contribute positively to their communities instead of conforming to societal expectations.

The THRIVE program itself started as the “Your Enterprise Scheme” in 2019 at BSP headquarters in Papua New Guinea, focusing on supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) there. BSP Fiji adapted the program for the local market, rebranding it as THRIVE to emphasize a dedication to fostering a resilient and vibrant economy.
