From Crisis to Creativity: How a Pandemic Sparked an Entrepreneur’s Floral Journey

After two decades in the tourism sector, Meli Rokotakala discovered his true passion amidst a global crisis. In 2021, while the world faced the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Meli left his job in Nadi and returned to his home in Nabalebale Village, Cakaudrove.

This uncertain period provided Meli the opportunity for reflection, allowing him to recognize the talents he possessed. While relaxing in the tranquility of his backyard garden, he found a deep appreciation for the vibrant beauty of flowers. This newly discovered love for horticulture inspired him to begin creating decorative arrangements for homes, a hobby that eventually evolved into a full-time business.

Drawing on his extensive experience with South Sea Cruises, Fiji Club, and Tuitai Adventure Cruises, Meli decided to channel his skills into establishing his own company, Meli’s Artfeast Investment. Since launching his business, he has gained recognition as a sought-after event decorator in Savusavu and Labasa, applying his creativity to a wide range of events, including birthday celebrations, funerals, weddings, corporate functions, and religious ceremonies.

A natural perfectionist, Meli carefully chooses flowers from his garden, ensuring that each arrangement showcases his keen eye for color and design. His entrepreneurial efforts also include opening a savings account with the BSP branch in Savusavu, marking a significant step toward achieving financial independence.

Meli eagerly embraced the opportunity to participate in a three-day workshop organized by BSP in collaboration with Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) under the THRIVE programme. THRIVE, which stands for “Together, Helping to build a Resilient, Inclusive, and Vibrant Economy,” is designed to equip entrepreneurs with the skills needed for effective business management.

Recognizing the importance of sound business practices, Meli understands that success relies not only on passion but also on the ability to manage profits and losses. He reflects, “Not everyone is destined for blue- or white-collar jobs. Some young people have the potential to become successful entrepreneurs, and it’s crucial that they receive the necessary support to flourish.”

As the oldest of four siblings and a former student of Savusavu Secondary School, Meli underscores the importance of pursuing a career that brings happiness. He notes that many individuals remain in unsatisfying jobs for the sake of their families, emphasizing the need to discover what truly brings joy and to pursue that path.

Meli expressed profound gratitude to BSP and ABV for the transformative experience provided by the workshop in Labasa. He encourages the youth to identify their unique talents and to contribute to their communities rather than simply conforming to societal expectations.

The Fiji THRIVE programme initially launched as the “Your Enterprise Scheme” (YES) at BSP headquarters in Papua New Guinea in 2019. In partnership with ABV, it was designed to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in PNG by providing essential knowledge and resources. BSP Fiji adopted and customized the programme to better meet local needs, renaming it THRIVE to reflect its commitment to fostering a resilient and vibrant economy.
