From Crisis to Creation: A Journey into Horticultural Entrepreneurship

After two decades in the tourism sector, Meli Rokotakala discovered his true calling amid a global crisis. In 2021, as the COVID-19 pandemic intensified, Meli was compelled to leave his position in Nadi and return to his home in Nabalebale Village, Cakaudrove.

During this uncertain time, he took a moment for introspection to uncover the talents that had been bestowed upon him. While relaxing in his backyard garden, he found a deep appreciation for the vibrant beauty of flowers. This newfound passion for horticulture inspired him to create decorative items for his home, ultimately evolving into a successful business.

Drawing from his extensive experience with South Sea Cruises, Fiji Club, and Tuitai Adventure Cruises, Meli decided to harness his skills and creativity to launch Meli’s Artfeast Investment. Since its inception, he has gained a reputation as a premier event decorator in Savusavu and Labasa, enhancing various occasions such as birthdays, funerals, weddings, corporate events, and religious ceremonies.

A perfectionist at heart, Meli carefully selects the flowers from his own garden, ensuring each arrangement showcases his keen eye for color and design. His entrepreneurial journey has also led him to open a savings account with the BSP in Savusavu, marking a pivotal move toward financial autonomy.

Upon learning about a three-day workshop offered by BSP in collaboration with Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) under the THRIVE program, Meli eagerly embraced the opportunity to broaden his business acumen. THRIVE, which stands for “Together, Helping to build a Resilient, Inclusive, and Vibrant Economy,” is designed to equip entrepreneurs with the essential skills to manage their enterprises effectively.

Meli understands that success hinges not only on passion but also on the ability to navigate financial aspects. He reflected, “Not everyone is destined for blue- or white-collar jobs. Some young people have the potential to become successful entrepreneurs, and it’s crucial they receive the necessary support to flourish.”

As the eldest of four siblings and a graduate of Savusavu Secondary School, Meli highlighted the importance of pursuing endeavors that bring joy. “Many people are unhappy in their jobs but continue for the sake of their families. It’s vital to find out what makes you truly happy and follow that path.”

He expressed sincere gratitude to BSP and ABV for the transformative experience provided by the workshop in Labasa. Meli encourages young individuals to explore their unique talents and contribute to their communities instead of merely following the crowd.

The Fiji THRIVE program began as the “Your Enterprise Scheme” (YES) at BSP in Papua New Guinea in 2019. In partnership with ABV, it was created to empower and support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in PNG by offering essential knowledge, resources, and skills. BSP Fiji adapted the program for the local market, renaming it THRIVE to signify its commitment to fostering a resilient, inclusive, and vibrant economy.
