Unaisi Finau Lagilaginagauna embodies the noble essence of teaching, dedicating her life to educating students in remote rural and maritime schools. At 36 years old, her passion for education is deeply rooted in her upbringing in Korolevu, Navatu, where her hardworking parents inspired her with their perseverance.

As the eldest of six siblings, Ms. Lagilaginagauna attended Labasa Sangam Secondary School, where her dream of becoming a teacher took shape, largely inspired by her grandmother. Her academic commitment led her to Lautoka Teachers College, from which she graduated in 2009. Following her education, she was assigned to various schools, including Nasinu District School and Kia District School, with most of her service concentrated in the province of Cakaudrove.

Ms. Lagilaginagauna’s career faced a setback in 2018 due to personal challenges that required her to leave the teaching profession temporarily. However, she viewed this difficult period as an opportunity for growth. In 2022, she returned to the education sector and secured a position at Vulaga District School, where she now thrives for three years, fully embodying her passion for teaching.

She views her role not merely as a job but as a means to shape future generations. “I love my job. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” she expresses. With a hopeful vision for the future, Ms. Lagilaginagauna aspires to become the permanent secretary for education, highlighting her commitment to fostering the education of children who represent the country’s future.

This story of resilience and dedication resonates well with the experiences of fellow educators like Irena Tuilovoni, who leads Nasau District School. Tuilovoni, at 53, continues her mission of nurturing future leaders amidst significant challenges faced by students in remote areas. Similarly, her devotion and commitment to her students reflect the shared ethos of educators dedicated to overcoming obstacles for the sake of their pupils’ futures.

In a landscape where teaching can often be challenging, the stories of both Unaisi Lagilaginagauna and Irena Tuilovoni serve as reminders of the transformative power of education and the resilience of those who commit their lives to this noble profession. Their experiences encourage others to recognize the vital role that passionate educators play in shaping the future, inspiring young minds to dream big and achieve their potential. The role of teachers in fostering hope and guiding the next generation cannot be overstated, showcasing the enduring impact they have on children’s lives.
