Jone Mataturaga had always aspired to be a school teacher, a dream nurtured during his upbringing in Veinuqa Village, Namalata, Tailevu. However, life’s unpredictable nature led him on an unexpected path. While exploring opportunities online, he came across a recruitment advertisement for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). Although a military career had never crossed his mind, the ad sparked a sense of inspiration in him.
Mr. Mataturaga recalled his initial surprise at this alternative route. “Seeing that application felt like a sign to try something different,” he shared, recognizing the potential for personal transformation. Leaving the familiar surroundings of his village, he committed to 18 months of rigorous training at the RFMF base in Nasinu. This experience was a stark departure from the classroom setting he had envisioned.
He candidly mentioned the difficulties he faced during the early months of training, stating, “I was inexperienced and found it challenging.” However, as he persevered, he began to embrace the valuable lessons of discipline, responsibility, and pressure management. The military experience not only taught him about leadership but propelled him into a role he never imagined he would occupy.
Throughout his training, Mr. Mataturaga forged strong connections with his fellow soldiers, emphasizing the significance of teamwork and unity. “The bonds we built became a source of strength,” he noted, highlighting the collective resilience fostered among them.
Reflecting on his journey, he expressed pride in his achievements, stating, “This path has been rewarding in ways I never imagined.” Though his dream of becoming a teacher remains, he views his military experience as a meaningful contribution to society.
