From Classroom Dreams to Military Reality: One Man’s Unexpected Journey

Jone Mataturaga always aspired to be a school teacher, nurtured by his upbringing in Veinuqa Village, Namalata, Tailevu. However, his life took an unexpected turn when he discovered a recruitment advertisement for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) while searching online for new opportunities.

Despite having never thought about a career in the military, Mataturaga felt compelled to apply. “I never imagined I’d take this route,” he shared, noting that the ad felt like a sign to explore a different avenue. He recognized the potential for a transformative experience.

Mr. Mataturaga left his village behind to undergo 18 months of rigorous training at the RFMF base in Nasinu. Looking back on his transformation, Mr. Mataturaga expressed pride in what he has accomplished, remarking, “This path has been rewarding in ways I never could have envisioned.” While he still holds onto his dream of becoming a teacher, he finds fulfillment in his military role, believing he can make a significant impact.
