Jone Mataturaga’s journey from aspiring school teacher to military member serves as an inspiring testament to embracing the unexpected. Growing up in Veinuqa Village, Namalata, Tailevu, Jone had always envisioned a teaching career. However, life presented him with an unforeseen opportunity when he discovered a recruitment advertisement for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) while browsing online.
Initially apprehensive about a military path, Mr. Mataturaga treated the advertisement as a sign to explore new possibilities. “I never imagined I’d take this route,” he shared, acknowledging the profound effect it had on him. Determined to step outside of his comfort zone, he embarked on an intense 18-month training program at the RFMF base in Nasinu.
The training proved rigorous, challenging him both physically and mentally. “The first few months were tough,” he admitted, highlighting the difficulties he faced as a newcomer. However, as he progressed, Jone learned invaluable lessons in discipline, responsibility, and leadership. “I never thought I’d lead a team, but this experience made it possible,” he remarked, emphasizing the unexpected personal growth he achieved.
Through this journey, he forged deep connections with fellow soldiers, discovering the immense value of teamwork and camaraderie. “The bonds we built became a source of strength,” he said. Reflecting on his transformation, he expressed pride in the accomplishments he achieved through the military.
