Fiji’s young talent in Australian Football League (AFL), Makayla Sukhu, is inspired by her mother, Vilisi Sukhu, who was a member of the inaugural women’s Fiji Vonu team in 2014. Makayla expressed her desire to follow her mother’s legacy in the sport, stating that her mother was a significant influence in her decision to take up AFL.

“I’ve always enjoyed this sport, even from when I was younger,” she shared. Makayla recognizes the importance of teamwork and endurance, acknowledging that AFL encompasses a variety of skills that can be challenging at first. She is optimistic about spreading her enthusiasm for the sport and hopes to guide her sister in playing as well.

In addition to her athletic endeavors, Makayla recently made her mark in chess, winning the Women’s Candidate Master title during the 45th World Chess Olympiad held in Budapest, where she represented Fiji and achieved 3.5 points out of 7 against competitors from 193 countries.

Currently balancing her studies at Suva Grammar School with sports, she also plays netball for the school’s team and the Lomaiviti club. “Sport is beneficial as it provides a mental break and helps relieve stress from school,” she noted. Makayla expressed gratitude for her parents’ support throughout her journey, acknowledging that divine intervention has also played a role in her achievements.

With her determination and support from her family, Makayla Sukhu is paving the way for a bright future in sports and inspiring others in Fiji to pursue their passions as well.

This story highlights the intersection of family legacy and personal aspiration, which can serve to motivate young athletes in Fiji and beyond to follow their dreams.
