The COVID-19 pandemic may have disrupted Crystal Nivedita Shobha’s education, but it did not diminish her determination. The 23-year-old from Nabua recently celebrated her graduation from the University of the South Pacific with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Biology.
“It feels especially significant to graduate after COVID-19,” she shared. “It’s been a long journey, and I’m incredibly grateful for all the support I’ve received.”
During her three years at the university, Crystal found a sense of community within the close-knit Tongan group in Fiji. She expressed her gratitude, saying, “I studied alongside many Tongans; while some graduated locally, many traveled to support me today. That means everything to me.”
Crystal’s passion for science was ignited by her teachers and friends in high school. She explained, “Biology came easily to me as it helped explain the reasons behind everything. I pursued science to satisfy my curiosity.”
She acknowledges the limited job opportunities in the scientific field in Fiji. Currently, she is working at her father’s company while searching for positions where she can apply her newly acquired skills. “Though it’s not what I studied for, I am learning a lot,” she noted. “I will continue until more science-related opportunities come my way.”
Looking to the future, Crystal has clear aspirations. “I plan to pursue an MBA next year,” she said, expressing her eagerness to face new challenges and broaden her knowledge. “I’m excited about the possibilities ahead.”
Her determination to move forward, despite the challenges, serves as an inspiration. When asked what advice she would offer to current students at USP, Crystal’s response was straightforward: “The journey may be tough, but with the support of family and friends, you’ll find the motivation to succeed.”
She credited her parents for their unwavering support throughout her journey. “I couldn’t have accomplished this without them. My friends and family encouraged me when times were tough and celebrated every achievement with me.”
As she embarks on a new chapter in her life, Crystal remains passionate about science. Despite uncertainties ahead, she is confident that her resilience and curiosity will propel her to new heights. For now, she is focused on enjoying her well-deserved success with those who have always believed in her.
