Freddy Tora, 30, has achieved remarkable milestones in his life through hard work and determination. Originating from Nailaga in Ba, he began his journey by diving for mussels with his family. Overcoming significant financial obstacles after high school, he aspired to become self-sufficient.

On September 26, Tora celebrated his graduation as an Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (ABM), a role focused on aircraft operations and handling. He underwent a rigorous three-month training program at the Navy boot camp located at the U.S. Naval Station in Great Lakes, Illinois. Tora was inspired to join the U.S. Navy as a stepping stone towards a future medical career.

Expressing gratitude, he remarked, “I felt blessed to the Almighty for His provisions and strength.” He described the challenges of training, particularly the mental aspect, which he considered crucial for becoming an effective leader and sailor.

Some training elements reminded him of home, particularly during the swimming test, which evoked memories of diving for mussels in the Ba River, proving beneficial for his preparations.

The second youngest of four siblings, Tora was raised by Maika Tora and Miriama Rokovui in Ba, where he completed his early education at Ratu Rusiate Nabuta Memorial School and later attended Ba Methodist High School. In 2014, he repeated Year 13 at Dilkusha Methodist High School to improve his scores.

Tora began studying at Fiji National University in 2016 for a Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources Management, but financial constraints led him to pause his education to support his family through self-employment in barbering and event planning.

In 2019, he graduated from the University of the South Pacific, and in 2022, he relocated to the U.S., leaving behind his home and loved ones. Settling in Kansas City, he studied at Pratt Community College and worked as a certified nursing assistant in a hospital for a year before moving to California in 2023.

His motivation stems from his mother, family, and friends, both in Fiji and the U.S. Tora expressed his desire to eventually pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, driven by his passion for helping others. Currently, he has moved to Florida to attend his A-School (Aviation School), where he awaits further orders.
