From Adversity to Empowerment: How One Grandma is Shaping Her Future

Asena Naiwase, a resilient single mother from Delaitokatoka, Kalabu, has proven that perseverance can overcome life’s challenges. At 60 years old, she remains dedicated to providing for her three adult children, all of whom have established jobs and families of their own.

Despite her children growing up, Asena has shown no intention of slowing down. She is frequently seen selling perfumes and her own handcrafted jewelry on the streets of Suva. What began as a hobby has transformed into a source of income, as Asena discovered her talent for creating beautiful jewelry pieces.

“I started doing this five years ago,” Asena shared. “This has become one of my favorite hobbies, alongside meeting people, helping those in need, and baking.” Previously, she sold vegetables until her younger daughter inspired her to explore jewelry making. Her daughter, having learned the craft from DIY videos online, took on the role of teacher.

“My daughter uses the internet often and learned skills from YouTube. After watching, she taught me,” Asena explained. “I find it very interesting, and I enjoy it.”

Asena’s journey began with her selling perfumes, which she procured from her son-in-law who returned from Iraq. As interest grew in her handmade earrings and necklaces, she made the decision to expand her offerings. With her daughter’s guidance, she began crafting jewelry using raw materials she purchased herself.

She finds fulfillment in her work, appreciating the financial empowerment it brings, as well as the opportunity to connect with new people daily. “I meet new customers and make many friends,” she said. “This job is less stressful. I can come and go as I please since there is no one to answer to.”

Her message to other single mothers is clear: seek opportunities for success. “Staying at home won’t help. Try to do something that will make you self-sufficient and not a burden to anyone. You have to go out and look for ways to succeed.”
