Jamil Suleman’s journey to success is a testament to resilience despite a challenging upbringing. Raised in a turbulent home, Suleman, now the elder of two siblings, embodies the notion that self-belief and strong family values can lead to remarkable achievements.
Relocating from Nadi to Suva at 14, his childhood was marred by emotional struggles and family conflicts that fostered insecurity and low self-esteem. He faced tremendous pressure academically, feeling the weight of high expectations from both his parents and himself. This led to significant anxiety and feelings of isolation from his peers.
Suleman confronted his mental health challenges largely on his own, using smoking and associating with negative influences as coping mechanisms. Economic difficulties compounded his struggles, creating a sense of hopelessness about his future.
His love for animals initially inspired him to pursue a career in veterinary science, but his path shifted to journalism and social work at the University of the South Pacific after receiving a scholarship. While balancing a rigorous academic schedule with extracurricular activities and part-time work, he developed effective time management skills, which allowed him to prioritize and navigate through his responsibilities.
Graduating in 2021, followed by a postgraduate diploma in social policy in 2022, Suleman overcame obstacles with the support of his family and friends. He considers his parents his greatest inspiration, who continually motivated him even in challenging times.
Celebrating his graduation, Suleman felt an immense sense of achievement and gratitude for those who supported him along the way. In his leisure time, he enjoys mobile gaming and reading MANGA comics, which help him unwind and develop strategic thinking skills.
Looking ahead, Suleman aspires to open a small restaurant while advancing in his career as a communications officer. He dreams of becoming a homeowner and settling down, emphasizing the importance of patience and hard work.
His advice to the younger generation is to cultivate resilience and adaptability, seeing setbacks as opportunities for growth. Currently, he works as an assistant information officer with the Department of Information, continuing to break barriers and inspire others.
