From Adversity to Achievement: Meet the Cadet Star Rising from Raiwaqa

Ana Seru, a student from John Wesley College, was recognized as the top female cadet during the passing-out parade held at Albert Park in Suva. Growing up in the socially challenged Raiwaqa area, Ana, 14, reflected on her journey during the one-week cadet training, which presented difficulties due to the humidity and the complexity of the marching maneuvers.

Despite the challenges of her upbringing, Ana emphasized her commitment to excellence in her education. “I knew my upbringing was not ideal, but I strived for excellence every time I stepped into the classroom,” she stated. She believes that education is the key to improving her life and that making sound decisions, especially when facing peer pressure, has been vital for her.

In a show of gratitude, Ana dedicated her achievement to her father and siblings, who were present at the event. As the more reserved member of her family, she expressed hope that her success would motivate her younger siblings. “I hope this award will inspire my younger siblings to believe that they can achieve anything if they set their minds to it,” she said, sharing that her primary school siblings are now enthusiastic about joining secondary school and participating in cadet training.
