From Accident to Support: A Fijian’s Heartwarming Journey

Spread the love

Iliesa Toga, a retired soldier and security guard, has expressed heartfelt gratitude following an overwhelming outpouring of support from Fijians around the globe after a recent car accident incident that garnered viral attention.

On the evening of October 18, at approximately 7:55 PM, Mr. Toga was involved in a collision with Bhavik Verma’s vehicle in Narere, Nasinu. During the encounter, Mr. Verma recorded Mr. Toga, who, unaware he was being filmed, was seen sincerely apologizing and promising to pay for the damages. In the video, Mr. Toga can be seen with his hands clasped, reflecting his humility and regret over the situation.

After the accident, Mr. Verma requested a payment of $500, but Mr. Toga assessed the damage as minor and suggested a payment of $200 instead. “I didn’t know he was recording me. I told him I would pay $100 first, which I did, and I planned to pay the other $100 the next day,” he shared.

The emotional response captured in the video resonated with many, and by November 12, Mr. Toga had received a total of $3,347.38 through M-Paisa transfers from supporters all around the world. “Au vakavinavinaka saka,” Mr. Toga expressed gratefully in his native language, thanking Fijians from the UK, US, New Zealand, Australia, and Europe. He emphasized that this support shows that love can overcome any obstacle.

However, in the wake of the video going viral, Mr. Toga also faced challenges. Allegations of threats against Mr. Verma’s family surfaced on social media, prompting Mr. Toga to call for forgiveness and denouncing violence. He has since filed a police report at the Samabula Police Station, but no official response has yet been provided, even though inquiries directed at the police remain unanswered.

Mr. Verma stated that his intention in sharing the video was to identify Mr. Toga, but acknowledged that the situation escalated beyond that. Despite attempts to reach Mr. Toga, Verma claims he was unable to make contact.

Sanjay, Mr. Verma’s father, expressed worry over the situation, revealing they have requested additional police patrols around their home due to receiving threats. Meanwhile, the support for Mr. Toga has been both financial and moral; one supporter, Dinesh Lal, contributed $202 and remarked, “Seeing the video broke my heart. No one should be humiliated like that.” In addition, mechanic Deo Kumar from Suva has offered free garage services to Mr. Toga, demonstrating solidarity and compassion.

Considering legal action against Mr. Verma for defamation, Mr. Toga has postponed the final payment of $100 until the matter is resolved. Despite these challenges, Mr. Toga remains touched by the kindness that fellow Fijians have shown him. The Land Transport Authority’s media liaison, Geraldine Panapasa, pointed out the importance of the “Drive Safe, Celebrate Responsibly” campaign, which aims to promote safer road use during the festive season.

This story reflects the strength of community support and compassion in challenging times. It serves as a reminder that even in difficult situations, goodwill can shine brightly, bringing hope and unity.
