Varun Vimlesh Lal, a powerlifter born in Fiji, has made significant strides in his journey, which embodies not just athletic prowess but also the pursuit of dreams, aspirations, and the relentless spirit to overcome life’s challenges. Recently, Lal earned a commendable third place in the 125kg category at the World Powerlifting Championships held in the USA on November 15. The event saw competitors from Egypt and the USA secure the top two spots.
Currently residing in Park Ridge, Brisbane, Lal’s story is one of resilience and dedication. Hailing from a small farming community in Ba, where his parents tirelessly worked as sugarcane farmers, he inherited a strong work ethic from his father, who spent long hours to provide for the family and afford his son greater opportunities.
With dreams of a better future, Lal made the bold move to Australia to study Civil Engineering. The transition was daunting, but he credits his brother Rajneel and sister-in-law Vennita for their unwavering support that helped him navigate the new cultural landscape.
His foray into powerlifting began just a year ago, and within nine months, he had the opportunity to represent Australia in an international competition under the CAPO federation. Lal aspires to achieve a remarkable deadlift of 230-240 kg, an impressive goal for someone who started from modest beginnings in Fiji.
Despite initial challenges in adjusting his mechanical engineering knowledge to meet Australian standards, Lal found encouragement and support from his colleagues, enabling him to succeed in his new role as a mechanical technician—a career he never envisioned back in Fiji.
Recently, his journey encountered a setback when his father suffered a serious accident in Fiji. Although his father is recovering, Lal feels the strain of being apart as he prepares for competitions. He carries his father’s spirit with him, stating, “I will lift for him in the upcoming event,” highlighting the motivational role his father plays in his life.
For Lal, this competition is not merely a sporting event but a testament to breaking barriers and showcasing what someone from a small Indo-Fijian farming community can achieve on a global stage. He expresses profound gratitude for the support of his partner, Keisha, who has been his emotional anchor throughout his journey.
Lal’s story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, emphasizing that perseverance and determination can lead to remarkable achievements despite adversities. He aims to motivate the youth in the Pacific to chase after their dreams and believes that success is possible no matter the challenges one may face.
This narrative stands as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of supporting one another in the pursuit of our ambitions.
