George Speight prioritizes family following his release from prison after 24 years. The former coup leader, convicted of treason for orchestrating the 2000 coup, had been serving a life sentence until he received a presidential pardon last Thursday.
Since his release, Mr. Speight has avoided media attention while awaiting the arrival of his older brother, Sam Speight, from Hamilton, New Zealand. Sam arrived on Friday.
Describing the emotional reunion, niece Jacqueline (Jackie) Speight stated, “Reunited after 24 long years, the brothers come together in freedom, celebrating the love, memories, and unbreakable bond that time can’t erase.” She emphasized the importance of family, noting, “It is family first. A season of gratitude.”
Jackie was surprised by the events surrounding Mr. Speight’s release, claiming it was unprecedented and unforgettable. “It will forever be etched in my mind and heart. Praise God indeed,” she said.
Mr. Speight’s younger siblings, Jim, Esther, and Salome, live abroad, along with their 93-year-old father, Sam Speight Sr. Meanwhile, relatives in Naivicula, Wainibuka, Tailevu, are also eager to reconnect with him. One family member expressed their anticipation, stating, “He went in when he was 43; he is returning home now at 67. We’re looking forward to meeting him.”
