A 40-year-old woman is scheduled to appear in court today facing charges of Obtaining Financial Advantage. The allegation stems from an incident on July 24, 2024, where she purportedly deceitfully acquired $165 from a victim through the M-Paisa platform.
Investigations by the police revealed that the victim encountered a Facebook post advertising an iPhone for sale at the price of $330. In her interest to buy the phone, she reached out to the accused, who then instructed her to send a deposit of $165, promising that the phone would be sent via courier. After the victim transferred the funds, she was unable to establish further contact with the accused. Concerned about the situation, she reported the incident to the Tavua Police Station.
As a result, the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce Team has charged the accused, who is now in custody and will be presented at the Magistrates Court in Nabouwalu.
This incident underscores the importance of vigilance and caution when engaging in online transactions, particularly in response to social media advertisements. As the case progresses, it serves as a reminder for consumers to verify sellers and ensure their transactions are secure, helping to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Summary: A woman faces court charges after allegedly scamming a victim out of $165 for a non-existent iPhone sold online. Police have acted on the victim’s report, and the accused is now in custody.
