The Magistrates Court has determined that Mohammed Shafraaz Ali, a former senior engineer with the Water Authority of Fiji, will face charges related to corruption. He has been indicted on a single count of bribery by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption.

The allegations state that between March 1, 2017, and June 30, 2017, while serving as the Regional Engineer Bulk at WAF, Ali accepted an advantage in the form of a return air ticket worth $1,430.60 to Sydney, Australia, provided by Sphynx Solutions Pte Limited on March 21, 2017, in exchange for actions performed in his official capacity.

Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou reviewed submissions from both sides and concluded that there is sufficient evidence for Ali to answer to the bribery charges. The defense has requested additional time to gather further instructions from Ali to clarify the next steps in the case. The proceedings have been scheduled to resume on September 19 for mention.
