Former PM Bainimarama’s Phone Calls: A Deep Dive into the Controversy

The Fiji Corrections Services commissioner, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has stated that former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama did not make any unauthorized phone calls while incarcerated. This announcement came on Friday following allegations that Bainimarama had used his mobile phone at the Nasinu Correction Centre.

Dr. Nakarawa assured that no calls had been made, stating, “The SIM card was there, so we sent it for analysis but there have been no calls established.” He also mentioned that the police cybercrime unit examined the SIM card and found no evidence of calls made outside.

Last month, the Fiji Corrections Services confirmed that a comprehensive investigation was conducted regarding the authorized use of Bainimarama’s mobile phone. The High Court granted him permission to use the phone to monitor his pacemaker app.

Bainimarama is currently serving a one-year prison sentence after being convicted of attempting to pervert the course of justice related to an issue involving the University of the South Pacific.
