Kalaveti Ravu, the former Minister for Fisheries and Forests, was absent from the Magistrates Court in Suva during a hearing related to charges of corruption. His lawyer, Jioji Cakau, noted that Ravu was fulfilling his parliamentary responsibilities in Nadi, but State counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu pointed out that they had not been informed of his absence in advance.
Alongside Ravu, Tekata Toaisi, the former Regional Manager for Fisheries and Forests in the North, appeared in court. The allegations against Ravu state that, between July 25 and August 31, 2023, he unlawfully intervened in a Ministry of Forestry investigation regarding the illegal trade of banned beche-de-mer species. Toaisi is accused of assisting Ravu in this abuse of office while he was still employed by the Ministry.
The case is set to be revisited on January 21.
This situation highlights ongoing issues related to corruption and accountability in government, a relevant concern for many nations. As the legal proceedings continue, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency in public service, fostering hope for a more accountable future.
