Former Minister for Fisheries and Forests Kalaveti Ravu was absent from court today, where he faces charges of abuse of office. He is jointly charged with former Regional Manager North Tekata Toaisi, who appeared before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou at the Suva Magistrates Court.
During the proceedings, FICAC Counsel Lavenia Ravuikadavu expressed concern over Ravu’s absence, noting that FICAC had not received prior notification. She warned that a bench warrant may be issued if Ravu fails to appear in court during the next scheduled hearing.
Toaisi’s attorney, Jioji Cakau, explained that Ravu’s absence was due to his attendance at a Parliament Committee Meeting in Nadi. He also stated that Ravu’s legal counsel would submit the pre-trial documents and disclosures to FICAC by Friday.
The charges indicate that from July 25 to August 31, 2023, Ravu allegedly interfered in a Ministry of Forestry investigation regarding the illegal trade of banned beche-de-mer species. Additionally, it is claimed that Toaisi assisted Ravu in the alleged abuse of office.
The case has been rescheduled for mention on the 21st of this month, with a trial date set for February.
This case highlights ongoing efforts to ensure accountability in government roles and the proper enforcement of laws concerning wildlife protection. As proceedings move forward, it serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and integrity in public office.
