Filimone Jitoko, a retired judge, has been elected as the new Speaker of Parliament following a significant majority vote of 34-15. He prevailed over Ruveni Nadalo, a nominee put forward by the Leader of Opposition, Inia Seruiratu.

Justice Jitoko boasts an extensive judicial background, having served as the Chief Justice of the Nauru Supreme Court from 2017 until 2000, and as the Registrar from 2015 to 2017. He is also well-educated, having graduated from the University of the South Pacific in 1969 before completing his law degree at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. In addition, he secured admission to the New Zealand Bar in 1978.
