An appeal against the deregistration of the FijiFirst party was confirmed last night and has been lodged with the Electoral Commission (EC).

Former party members had until yesterday to file the appeal.

The party was deregistered by the Registrar of Political Parties, Ana Mataiciwa, on July 1, and those affected had 15 days to appeal the decision with the EC.

Two sources within the group, who have not shown support for the Coalition Government, confirmed last night that an appeal had been lodged.

“Please get the details from the Electoral Commission. We don’t want to jeopardize the application process,” said a former party member.

EC chairperson Barbara Malimali stated that she couldn’t comment on the issue.

The ruling by the Electoral Commission will be final and binding, without the possibility of being challenged in any court.
