An appeal against the deregistration of the FijiFirst party has been lodged with the Electoral Commission (EC), as confirmed last night. The deadline for the appeal by former party members was yesterday.
The Registrar of Political Parties, Ana Mataiciwa, had deregistered the party on July 1, giving those affected 15 days to appeal to the EC. Two separate sources within the group, who have not shown their support to the Coalition Government, confirmed the appeal.
“Please get the details from the Electoral Commission. We don’t want to jeopardize the application process,” said a former party member.
EC Chairperson Barbara Malimali said she couldn’t comment on the issue. A ruling by the Electoral Commission will be final and cannot be challenged in any court of law.
