Former FijiFirst MPs Seek Meeting with Prime Minister: What’s Brewing in Fijian Politics?

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced on Friday that he plans to meet with former FijiFirst and Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) this weekend. This comes after the de-registration of the FijiFirst political party by the Registrar of Political Parties, Ana Mataiciwa.

Rabuka mentioned that Opposition MP Mosese Bulitavu had made a group audience request for the meeting. This gathering is expected to focus on the political status of the Opposition MPs and how they can best serve their parliamentary duties.

“I’m meeting them this weekend. It’s just a group request from Mo (Mosese),” Rabuka said.

Earlier this week, the Prime Minister stated he was open to discussions and emphasized the government’s commitment to collaborative dialogue on national issues. He also highlighted his ongoing communication with Bulitavu, who is his nephew and a former colleague in the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA).

Meanwhile, former FijiFirst Opposition MP Aliki Bia, now an Independent MP, has expressed his willingness to support the People’s Alliance/National Federation Party and SODELPA-led Coalition Government. On Friday, Bia told reporters that he is open to any responsibilities that Prime Minister Rabuka might offer him.

“I am open to any opportunity of responsibility offered by the Prime Minister,” Bia said. “I’ve consulted with my family and my voters. If I am offered opportunities to help the Government govern the people of Fiji, I’ll be more than ready and willing to give my support.”

Bia joins other Opposition MPs, including Penioni Ravunawa, Viliame Naupoto, Ketan Lal, Mosese Bulitavu, and Semi Koroilavesau, in this new chapter of Fiji’s political landscape.
