Former Boxing Commission Fiji official, Subhash Appanna, has called for a “fresh start” amid calls for transparency regarding the involvement of promoters with boxers. This comes after allegations that promoters were exploiting boxers for their own benefit emerged. Boxing trainer and former boxer, Saimoni Taudomo, suggested that the Boxing Commission Fiji (BCF) were prioritising the interests of promoters over their duty to protect boxers.
A dramatic turn resulted in Appanna refusing to renew the promoter licence for 2023 of Freddy Chand from South Pacific Boxing Promotions. Appanna, who had the responsibility of implementing and enforcing the decision, indicated the new board were demanding a fresh approach.
Controversy has ensued over the scheduled title fight on August 10. Two of Freddy’s boxers, Shalvin Chand and Ritesh Goundar, are set to compete for a title that was taken from Binnu Singh Jr without clear justification. The decision to strip Singh Jr of the title has raised questions about who stands to gain from the move.
Despite being active in the ring, Singh Jr hasn’t had the support from BCF to defend the title. Additionally, as Singh Jr holds four titles, it’s been argued that it’s BCF’s responsibility to direct him on which one to defend. Questions arise about whether it’s fair to strip him of his belt if he hasn’t defended it because he’s been defending another title.
Chand’s next promotion is set for August 10 at Subrail Park in Labasa.
