Former AG’s Bail Variation Case Ruling Revealed

The Magistrates Court in Suva has declined to review the bail variation case of former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. The decision was made by Resident Magistrate Yogesh Prasad.

In June, Magistrate Prasad had dismissed Sayed-Khaiyum’s application for a bail variation to travel to Singapore for medical reasons, stating that the travel was not essential, necessary, or urgent.

Suva lawyer Davenesh Sharma had requested the bail variation in a case where Sayed-Khaiyum is charged along with former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and former Health Minister Dr. Neil Sharma.

The court decided not to rule on a case before Magistrate Prasad, emphasizing that the bail decision made by him is within his jurisdiction.

Magistrate Sufia Hamza noted that any applications related to bail issues should be handled by the Magistrate overseeing the original matter, who is still presiding over the case in the Suva Magistrate’s Court.

The case is adjourned to Monday, August 5, for a hearing on the bail application. The former Attorney General was excused from attending today’s ruling due to illness from the previous day’s hearing.
