Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has affirmed that the recent actions taken by the Mercy Commission, including the pardons granted to George Speight and Shane Stevens, were made in accordance with due process and without any outside influence.
Rabuka emphasized that these decisions should be viewed as integral to Fiji’s ongoing journey toward reconciliation and healing. He noted that for the nation to move forward in unity and development, it is essential to reflect on past events and work collaboratively to forge a better future.
He stated, “Those of us who contributed to our nation’s instability must take responsibility for the delays in major development progress.” He described the pardons as a positive opportunity for those who have served their sentences to reintegrate into society and contribute positively moving forward.
The Prime Minister urged all Fijians to support the Coalition Government’s initiatives aimed at fostering truth and reconciliation, emphasizing that these efforts are crucial for the nation’s growth and well-being.
