Foreign Goods and Drug Dangers: Fiji on High Alert

The Acting Police Commissioner of Fiji, Juki Fong Chew, has issued a warning regarding the potential influx of foreign goods mixed with illicit substances, particularly drugs. This alert comes in light of a disturbing discovery in New Zealand where lollies containing methamphetamine, sourced from Malaysia, were found.

Mr. Chew emphasized the need for vigilance as these dangerous drugs can be disguised in various forms within imported goods. “We need to be careful of all foreign goods coming into Fiji because people are mixing them with drugs and other substances,” he stated.

In an interview, he indicated that this issue is not limited to New Zealand and poses a considerable risk to Fiji as well. “It can reach our shores,” he noted, highlighting the geographical proximity of the two nations.

He urged local authorities to remain alert, pointing out that if precautions are not taken, innocent individuals in Fiji could become victims of this situation. Mr. Chew reassured the public that there is adequate manpower to handle these challenges, stating, “Despite the challenges we face, we will look after the people of Fiji, it’s part of our role.”

Furthermore, he affirmed the police’s significant responsibility in combating drug-related issues within the community.
