Fiji National University (FNU) is dedicated to promoting equal access, full participation, and reasonable accommodations for students in their academic pursuits, according to Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching, Associate Professor Jimaima Lako.
With the theme “Dream It, Weave It, Achieve It,” the upcoming Open Day will provide students with insight into the academic pathways available to them. Professor Lako emphasized the university’s commitment to disability awareness throughout its community and its ambition to lead nationally in providing equal opportunities in education and employment for individuals with disabilities.
The Open Day is expected to feature participation from around eight special schools across various FNU locations, with additional support services including sign language interpreters for students with hearing impairments and orientation instructors for those with vision impairments. Assistance will be arranged based on the students’ Individual Reasonable Adjustment Plan (IRAP).
FNU will also offer printed materials in alternative formats, such as Braille and large prints, and can help with enlarging documents or providing content in accessible digital formats. If the university cannot provide certain resources, efforts will be made to work with instructors to find solutions.
The provision of resources for special needs students includes access to assistive technologies like the JAWS Screen Reader and Magic Magnification Software. FNU’s dedicated computer lab is equipped with software to support students, featuring tools designed for those with vision impairments and voice-activated software for individuals with physical disabilities.
“Reasonable adjustments will be provided to help students meet the requirements of their programs effectively,” Professor Lako reiterated, highlighting the availability of accessible formats and additional exam time when necessary.
This year’s Open Day at FNU is expected to welcome 17,489 students across various venues, with the following dates: Nasinu on October 4-5, 2024, Naduna on October 3-4, 2024, Namaka and Natabua both on October 4, 2024.
