Fiji National University (FNU) is launching free HIV/AIDS and STI screening clinics for its students, emphasizing the institution’s dedication to student health and public wellness.
Dr. Henry Waqa, a General Practitioner at FNU, stated that these screening programs are essential to promoting health and wellness on campus. “While participation in the wellness, HIV, and STI screenings is voluntary, we strongly encourage all students to take part,” he noted. He highlighted the aim of these screenings is early detection and prevention, especially given the rising number of new HIV cases among young people in Fiji. Early detection allows for lifesaving treatment and better health outcomes.
At present, free Point of Care Testing (POCT) for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis is being offered at the Nasinu UniClinic, with plans underway to extend these services to the Natabua UniClinic. Dr. Waqa mentioned that POC testing presents a unique opportunity, as only a limited number of clinics in Suva provide such services.
Students can schedule an appointment through email or visit the clinic any weekday from 8 am to 3:30 pm. The testing procedure is simple and confidential; students complete a Voluntary Confidential and Counselling Test (VCCT) form, which includes basic sexual history information that remains private. The test itself requires a quick finger prick, with results ready in 15 minutes.
“Maintaining confidentiality is crucial,” Dr. Waqa emphasized. “All tests are conducted in privacy, and results are shared only with the individual tested.” In case of a positive result, FNU offers comprehensive support, including counseling and referrals to The Hub Clinic for ongoing care and treatment.
Dr. Waqa reassured students that receiving a positive result is not the end. “With appropriate care and medication, individuals can enjoy long, healthy lives,” he stated. FNU is also committed to combating the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and STIs by promoting awareness programs and encouraging open discussions, fostering a supportive environment for all its students.
