Fiji National University (FNU) is providing free HIV/AIDS and STI screening clinics for its students, highlighting its dedication to student health and community wellness.

Dr. Henry Waqa, FNU’s General Practitioner, emphasized that these screening initiatives are essential components of the university’s efforts to promote health on campus. “Participation in the wellness, HIV, and STI screenings is voluntary, but we highly encourage all students to get involved,” he stated.

“The aim is early detection and prevention of illnesses, especially given the rise in new HIV cases among young people in Fiji. Early diagnosis can lead to lifesaving treatment and improved health outcomes,” Dr. Waqa added.

Currently, free Point of Care Testing (POCT) for HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis is offered at the Nasinu UniClinic, with plans to extend services to the Natabua UniClinic soon. “POC testing presents a unique opportunity for our students, as such services are limited to only a few clinics in Suva,” Dr. Waqa noted.

Students can schedule an appointment via email or visit the clinic any weekday from 8 am to 3:30 pm. The testing is simple and confidential; students complete a Voluntary Confidential and Counselling Test (VCCT) form that requires basic sexual history information, which is kept completely private. The test involves a quick finger prick, with results available in just 15 minutes.

“Confidentiality is vital,” Dr. Waqa stressed. “All tests are performed privately, and results are shared only with the individual tested.”

If a positive result occurs, FNU offers extensive support, including counseling and referrals to The Hub Clinic for continued care and treatment. “We want to reassure students that a positive result is not a death sentence. With appropriate care and treatment, individuals can lead long, healthy lives,” Dr. Waqa affirmed.

FNU is committed to combating the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS and STIs through awareness initiatives and open conversations, fostering a supportive environment for all students.
