The Fiji Medical Association (FMA) has urged the public to utilize existing channels for addressing grievances against medical professionals. This call to action comes from FMA President Dr. Alipate Vakamocea following an incident that went viral on social media, where medical interns at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital were criticized for an alleged botched circumcision of a child.
The mother of the child expressed her frustrations, claiming that her son required a second circumcision due to the perceived inadequacies of the first procedure. She also alleged unprofessional behavior from the medical staff during her son’s surgery.
In light of these allegations, Dr. Vakamocea reiterated the importance of following proper procedures to lodge complaints against any medical intern, student, dentist, or medical professional. He emphasized that the FMA operates as an independent entity; upon receiving a complaint, it will be forwarded to the Conducts Committee for thorough investigation. Dr. Vakamocea assured the public that if any breaches of the code of conduct or professional standards are confirmed, appropriate actions will be taken.
He highlighted that while complaints about circumcision can arise from time to time, it is crucial for the public to recognize that such procedures are elective rather than emergency surgeries. Dr. Vakamocea acknowledged that complications can occur, noting that services at CWM hospital are provided at no cost, and the facility also serves as a teaching hospital aimed at training future medical professionals.
Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary for Health, confirmed that the ministry is aware of the situation and intends to respond through the media.
This situation underscores the importance of accountability in healthcare while also reminding the public of the complexities involved in medical procedures, particularly those that are elective. It is hopeful that through proper complaint mechanisms, the FMA can help improve medical standards and enhance communication between healthcare providers and patients in Fiji.
