FMA Urges Public to Address Grievances Amid Circumcision Controversy

The Fiji Medical Association (FMA) urges the public to utilize established channels for addressing grievances against healthcare professionals. This recommendation comes from FMA President Dr. Alipate Vakamocea in light of a recent social media incident criticizing medical interns at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for a reportedly botched circumcision procedure on a child.

The child’s parent publicly expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that her son required a second circumcision due to the inadequate execution of the initial surgery and alleged unprofessional behavior by the medical staff involved.

In response to these allegations, Dr. Vakamocea emphasized that there is a formal grievance procedure in place for individuals with concerns regarding medical interns, students, and professionals. He mentioned that FMA operates independently and that any submitted complaints would be forwarded to the Conducts Committee for investigation.

Dr. Vakamocea reassured the public that substantiated claims would be taken seriously, and any breach of professional standards would be addressed appropriately. He noted that while complaints related to circumcision procedures are not uncommon, it’s crucial for the public to recognize that such surgeries are elective and not performed under emergency conditions, which may lead to complications.

Furthermore, he highlighted that while services at CWM are provided at no charge, it also serves as a teaching hospital aimed at training future medical professionals. The Ministry of Health, led by Permanent Secretary Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, acknowledged the incident and plans to offer an official response through its media channels.
