Flying Fijians Under Review: What’s Next for Coach Mick Byrne?

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is scheduled to present a review of the team’s recent performances to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week. FRU chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu stated that this review process is standard practice, occurring at the conclusion of each campaign.

Byrne has just returned from a tour in Australia and will discuss the outcomes of this trip with the board. When asked about the board’s satisfaction with the recent performances of the Flying Fijians, Nayacalevu acknowledged that while the defeat against the All Blacks was disappointing, the victory over Georgia and the improvement in the team’s world ranking provide promising areas for future development.

Nayacalevu did express concerns regarding limited access to players, especially since the Barbarians match in Twickenham coincided with the Super Rugby season and fell outside the World Rugby access period. He emphasized that these issues are significant considerations.

Furthermore, all staff, including Byrne, are held to key performance indicators (KPIs) outlined in their job descriptions. Any directives will be determined after the review process, once Coach Mick returns to Fiji.

Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has submitted her resignation following the recent tour.
