Flying Fijians Under Review: What’s Next for Coach Mick Byrne?

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne is set to report to the Fiji Rugby Union board this week to evaluate the team’s recent performances. FRU chief executive officer Rovereto Nayacalevu informed SUNsports that it is standard procedure for the board to analyze all facets of performance following each campaign.

Byrne has just returned from Australia, where he will provide insights about the recent tour. When asked about the board’s satisfaction with the team’s performance, Nayacalevu acknowledged that while the outcome against the All Blacks fell short of expectations, the victory over Georgia and the improvement in the team’s world ranking are positive factors to build upon.

However, Nayacalevu expressed concerns regarding limited access to players, especially since the Barbarians match at Twickenham occurred during the Super Rugby season outside the World Rugby access window. He emphasized that both issues are areas of concern.

Nayacalevu also pointed out that all staff, including Byrne, have specific performance indicators as part of their job descriptions. He mentioned that any directives would be given after the review process once Coach Mick returns to the island. Additionally, Nayacalevu confirmed that Flying Fijians manager Eleina McDonald has resigned following the recent tour.
