The FIJI Water Flying Fijians will not receive bonuses for victories during their upcoming November tour, as confirmed by Peter Mazey, the interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). This decision follows a request made by a player through the players’ welfare association for bonus payments in recognition of their performance. However, Mazey expressed the FRU’s stance on the matter, stating, “We do not agree with it; the union supported this law enough is enough.”
Mazey emphasized the financial constraints the union faces, highlighting the significant expenses incurred during the Rugby World Cup campaign, which amounted to $11 million, with approximately one-third of that sum allocated to player payments. He noted, “If they go into the Rugby World Cup or winning constantly – yes, we look at those,” indicating that bonuses might be reconsidered in the future based on consistent performance.
Furthermore, FRU board member Jenny See-to pointed out that bonuses traditionally stem from government support, as the union itself lacks the financial resources to cover them. She underscored the importance of national pride in representing Fiji, stating, “I’d like to think that, like, all of us, we play for the country, not for personal.”
While the decision may be disappointing for the players, it underscores the collective responsibility of the union to manage funds wisely for sustainability in the long run. It could also serve as an opportunity for the team to focus on teamwork and national pride rather than individual financial incentives. This spirit can be a source of motivation as they prepare for competitive matches in November, fostering unity and a sense of purpose.
